Glamping it Up in Santa Barbara (Part One)

luxurycamping-santabarbara-xI am not a roughing it kind of girl.  Don't get me wrong, I love nature and being outside, but sleeping on the hard rocky ground and taking cold showers, or no shower at all (*shudder*)...not so much.  Hauling all the wine and chocolate I'm going to require up the mountain?  Not this girl!  Fortunately, there is an alternative for me, and those like me. It's called "glamping".

Glamorous camping, or glamping, is the perfect way to be surrounded by the peace and beauty of nature, away from article-2348041-1A7ECEA9000005DC-954 634x399your stressful life. You can sleep right out in the middle of nature without having to relieve yourself in the woods, eat dried food, or go for days without changing your clothes. As you would expect, Santa Barbara has some first-rate glamping options!

El Capitan Canyon, perched on the stunning Gaviota Coast just 20 miles north of Santa Barbara, offers luxury tents and cabins complete with soaking tubs, electric lights and hot showers.  Don't worry, you won't be in a sleeping bag on a hard floor - El Capitan Canyon has luxury willow beds with 400 thread count linens and down duvets. Nestled in historic groves of Oak and Sycamore trees along beautiful El Capitan Creek, MassageStoneC-U-150x150cedar cabins and safari tents with wooden floors are grouped in villages called "Stone Pine," "Peace Tree," "Lone Stone" and "Shaded Creek".  You'll awaken to the sound of bird call, not the nagging ache of sore muscles from a night spent shivering on the ground.

Each privately situated campsite features lounging chairs and a firepit with the option of having your grilling and s'mores fixings delivered right to your tent flap.  You can frolic in the Pacific Ocean just across the street, hike the property's IMG 5274breathtaking trails, or take a short drive into Santa Barbara to enjoy her many fabulous restaurants, wineries, and attractions. Complimentary beach cruisers are offered with every tent or cabin, so if cycling is more your thing, you're all set!

Naturally, there's a pool with a Jacuzzi and, just as in any fine resort, you can schedule a massage Gaviota(yes, please!) or take a yoga class - in case all that roughing it has taken its toll. On Saturday nights from May to September, guests are invited to dine fireside and enjoy the sounds of local blues, jazz, and bluegrass musicians.

Forgot something?  Visit the camp store for organic groceries,4316465077 339795c866 Santa Barbara County wines, aromatherapy oils, sunscreen, magazines and newspapers. Signature retail items include clothing and jewelry created by local artisans. There's also a restaurant that serves breakfast, lunch and dinner. Perhaps a latte and muffin before your morning hike, or a picnic lunch for the beach?

Bask in the glow of the firepit with a glass of local wine as you watch the moon travel across the sky, and then snuggle up in luxury linens under a thick downy comforter after a day spent hiking above the Pacific Ocean or lolling on the beach (and maybe a hot stone massage)...and I think you'll agree, the outdoor life doesn't get any better than this!

If you're nostalgic for the romance of the open road, but not for hours spent driving:  Stay tuned for Part Two!
